The original of this painting is in the National Gallery of Canada, located in Ottawa. It was painted in 1827. Corot was born in Paris in 1796 and died in Ville d'Avray in 1875. He became famous for his realistic landscapes.
This is the first painting Corot submitted to the Salon, an annual juried exhibition in Paris, and has been reproduced frequently. He painted it on a trip to Italy. He actually painted it twice, once in 1826 and again in 1827.
