The Chula Vista Downtown business Association (CVDBA) is pleased to announce the first phase of the Art and Utility Box Project and is seeking interested artists. The CVDBA is calling on artists to showcase their talent and help beautify the downtown community by painting the utility boxes within the downtown area. This is an excellent opportunity to participate in a project to beautify the streetscape of Downtown Chula Vista by transforming utility boxes into works of art, and showcasing your work at the same time. Supplies will be furnished (rags, primer, paint, brush and etc) paint colors will be limited to 5 colors, black, white, red, yellow, and blue. If you are selected you will also be given a $50.00 stipend for your work.

The first phase of the project will include 20 utility boxes, giving opportunity to several artists. To be considered for the first phase of the Art and the Utility Box Project please send the following:

1. Slides, prints, and/or promotional materials of your previous artwork;
2. A resume or bio;
3. An “8 1/2 x 11” color rendering of your proposed design for all four sides and top of the utility box. The theme should enhance the historic, cultural, and architectural pride and sense of indenity in the community. Please be mindful of the importance of pedestrian scale, be innovative while reflecting the spirit and character of the community. (Only 25% of the utility box can be dark colors due to heat transfer and possible damage to the equipment).
4. A self-addressed stamped envelope if you would like the samples of your previous work returned to you.

Submittals for the first phase of 20 must be received by October 3, 2003. Submittals received after this date will be considered for subsequent phases. Please include your name; phone number on the sketch and mail to.

A selection committee will review the materials and select the artists for the first phase of the Art and the Utility Box Project. Please note that the box designs are considered “public art”; therefore, your submittal must free of any material that may be deemed offensive, political, or pornographic. Experience of similar projects in other areas has found that unique colors and bold graphics work well, along with bright images that complement pedestrian traffic.

We hope you choose to participate in the Art and the Utility Box Project. Please call the CVDBA at (619) 422-1982 if you have any questions.
