I love St. Francis of Assisi. He advocated oneness with nature, holy poverty, blessed peace, simplicity and humility. In the midst of technology, information overload and material abundance, I am trying to find connection with nature, peace and simple joy. When I stand on top of hill in the spring, looking down at the Pacific Ocean and budding hills, I can feel the palpitation of energy breaking trough the surface of the earth and can hear the ecstatic chorus of spring. When I behold goodness and earnestness in the face of a person praying, I feel something beyond this life. When I see a mother's face smiling at her child, I can feel my mother's love once again.
I paint because I want to create something soothing, harmonious, beautiful, peaceful, joyful and full of life. Color, line, rhythm and shape are the core structural elements of my paintings. I adore the Impressionists' color and the Renaissance artists' line. I seek perfect lines and shapes to evoke harmony and peace. My Korean cultural background and art education in America, especially in abstract painting, are also essential ingredients in my paintings.
I like people and nature and am inspired to paint them. I want to bring out goodness, hope and joy in them. For me, painting is a slow process of distillation of what I perceive with my senses, mind, heart, soul and spirit. I want people to see my paintings with all their faculties: with heart, mind, soul and spirit as well as eyes.
